Music
As a self-taught composer, I mainly compose in the romantic tradition of classical music, taking my inspirations from Chopin, Brahms, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Medtner, among others. I hear an almost endless amount of musical fragments lingering in my mind at all times, and I try my best to notate, organize, and expand them to an ideal form that I pursue. Having taken up the piano at the age of four, I found musical compositions to be my method of expression to the world, at first writing piano pieces, later expanding to larger instrumentations such as a full SATB chorus. I’ve attached some of my best works here, all including myself as the performer, and I hope you have a good time listening to them!
Fantasie, from Trio for Oboe, Violin, and Piano
Scored for an unusual combination of three instruments, the trio is divided into four movements: an introductory Moderato, an homage to Schubert, a melancholic Andante, then a serene Adagio, concluded by this energetic Finale with a stirring coda.
Violin: Jeannie Yang; Oboe: Yaoyao Yuan.
Variations on a Russian Theme
Based on a popular tune originally from Moscow, the piece develops eight variations of different characters and an enormous Finale which takes the piece to a satisfying and monumental climax.
Romance for Saxophone
One of my personal favorites, the Romance takes inspiration from Chopin and Scriabin and features a gentle, calming melody.
Saxophone: Mark Zhu.
Infant holy, Infant lowly,
for Chorus SATB
This chorus piece is a setting of the popular hymn for Christmas. It was performed by our school’s chorus as part of the chapel service for Christmas, 2024.
Conductor: Jack Brown, with the Hotchkiss School Chorus.
